On 14 February 2026, Valentine’s Day took on an especially meaningful significance for Joshua and Emma as they exchanged vows at Kenosis Community Centre, just outside Pietermaritzburg.
The Guys Getting up to Tomfoolery
The Radiant Bride
While Emma was getting ready, I took Joshua and his dad, Marc, as well as Emma’s dad, Craig, outside for a groom shoot. The weather, however, had other ideas. With rain coming down, we had to make the most of the covered areas around the venue, creating some relaxed portraits of Joshua and the guys while staying out of the worst of the weather.
Emma made every bit a radiant bride in her elegant, modern wedding dress, supplied by Le Petit Bridal, who also did all the wedding co-ordination
The Ceremony
The Photo Shoot
The rain continued into the service, where a very emotional Johsua watched the love of his life enter the chapel on her father’s arm!
Fortunately, our timing couldn’t have been better. As the newlyweds and their guests emerged from the chapel, the rain finally cleared — giving us the opportunity to get outside and make the most of the break in the weather.
We photographed the families before moving on to portraits of Joshua and Emma together.
The Reception
And, of course, there was another very important member of the family to include: their baby son, Zachary, who was there to share his parents’ special day.
A brief reception followed, and Joshua and Emma opened the dance floor in the sweetest possible way — with little Zachary joining them for their first dance.
It was a beautiful Valentine’s Day wedding, but little did I know that I would be photographing this family again just a few months later, when Zachary had reached another important milestone….. TO BE CONTINUED

Discovering Harburg Retreat as a Wedding Venue for Wedding Photography in KwaZulu-Natal
Wedding photography is about more than photographing a couple on their special day. It is also about understanding the setting, the details, the people who bring the celebration together and the atmosphere that makes each wedding unique.
Recently, I had the opportunity to be part of a wonderful collaborative wedding shoot at Harburg Retreat, a peaceful countryside venue in KwaZulu-Natal, near Greytown. The shoot brought together a talented group of wedding professionals, models and creative suppliers to showcase what the venue can offer couples planning their wedding.
It was a styled shoot rather than a real wedding, but that was precisely what made it so much fun. We had the opportunity to create a complete wedding-day vision, from bridal gowns and flowers to hair, makeup, décor, cake, catering and, of course, photography.
Le Petite Bridal Boutique & Decor played an important role in the shoot, providing bridal outfits and décor. The different dresses, styling elements and carefully arranged details gave me plenty to work with photographically.

Flowers from Flora Belle Florists, styling, hair and makeup, catering, cake and other finishing touches all helped transform the venue into a collection of wedding-inspired scenes.
That collaborative approach is one of the things I particularly enjoy about styled shoots. Everyone brings their own expertise to the table, and the photographer gets to see how those individual elements come together through the camera.

Bridal Photography in the Harburg Gardens
The gardens at Harburg Retreat provided a lovely backdrop for the bridal portraits.
Natural surroundings can make such a difference to wedding photographs. Rather than creating every image inside a reception venue, couples can move outdoors and make use of the landscape, trees, gardens and available light.
For me, the aim is always to make the photographs feel natural and connected to the environment.
A beautiful wedding dress deserves to be photographed properly, but the photograph should still feel like a moment rather than simply a catalogue image.
The same applies to photographing the groom.
Having four brides and four grooms involved in the shoot allowed us to create different combinations and explore a variety of poses, compositions and relationships between the models.
Discovering Harburg Retreat as a Wedding Venue
Located in Harburg, in the KwaZulu-Natal countryside, Harburg Retreat is surrounded by peaceful gardens and beautiful natural scenery. The venue is approximately 49 kilometres from Greytown and is also within reach of Pietermaritzburg, Ballito and Durban.
The property is being promoted as a wedding and function venue, with spaces suitable for both larger celebrations and more intimate gatherings.
One of the highlights is the chapel/church, providing a natural setting for the ceremony before guests move through to the reception spaces. The gardens also provide plenty of opportunities for photographs, whether you’re looking for formal portraits or more relaxed images of the bridal couple.
For a wedding photographer, having a variety of spaces available is particularly exciting. It means the photographs don’t all have to look the same.
There are opportunities for beautiful bridal portraits outdoors, romantic couple photographs, group photographs with family and friends, as well as detail photographs that tell the story of the day.
Bringing a Team of Wedding Professionals Together
The Harburg Retreat shoot was very much a team effort.
Rather than simply photographing a bride and groom, the idea was to bring together a variety of wedding professionals and demonstrate how all the different elements of a wedding can work together.
There were eight models in total — four “brides” and four “grooms” — giving us the opportunity to create a variety of wedding-day scenes and photographic combinations.
Creating a Complete Wedding-Day Vision
What I enjoyed most about this collaboration was seeing how many different wedding services can come together to create one cohesive look.
A wedding involves far more than a venue and a photographer.
There are dresses, flowers, hair, makeup, décor, catering, cake, styling and countless other details that all contribute to the finished experience.
A styled shoot like this gives couples the opportunity to see those possibilities before their own wedding day.
It also gives wedding suppliers the opportunity to work together creatively and show prospective clients what they can offer.
For me, it was an opportunity to approach wedding photography in KwaZulu-Natal from a slightly different perspective — not documenting an actual wedding, but creating images that show how a wedding could look and feel at this beautiful countryside venue.
The Creative Team
A big thank you goes to everyone who contributed their time, skills and creativity to the Harburg Retreat collaboration.
A special thank you to Yolanda from Le Petite Bridal Boutique & Decor for bringing everyone together and making the collaboration possible.
Looking for Wedding Photography in KwaZulu-Natal?
Whether you’re planning a large celebration or a more intimate wedding, choosing the right photographer is about more than simply finding someone who can take beautiful photographs.
You want someone who will understand your day, work comfortably with your other suppliers and capture both the important moments and the little details that you may not notice yourself.
I have been photographing weddings and people for many years, and I love creating photographs that allow couples to remember not only what their wedding looked like, but how it felt.
If you’re planning a wedding in KwaZulu-Natal and are looking for a photographer, I’d love to hear about your plans.
Some weddings are simply about the big moments. Others are about the atmosphere, the people and those little fleeting moments that, when captured in an image, become memories for a lifetime.
This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of Teresa and Andries, surrounded by approximately 70 of their closest family and friends.
Their two daughters, Amelia and Eliana, were part of the wedding retinue, making the day an especially meaningful family celebration.
A Beautiful Midlands Ceremony
The ceremony took place in the old German chapel at Kenosis Community Centre in Bishopstowe, a beautiful and characterful setting that provided the perfect backdrop for the occasion.
And then there was the weather.
For a wedding photographer, a cool, cloudy day is pretty much a gift from above! The soft, diffused light creates beautiful, even illumination and allows for wonderfully atmospheric photographs without the harsh shadows that bright midday sunshine can bring.
Magical Timeless Portraits
Following the ceremony, Teresa and Andries stayed behind with me at Kenosis for a while, giving us the opportunity to create some magical, timeless portraits of the newly married couple.
With the beautiful old chapel and surrounding grounds providing such a wonderful setting, it was the perfect opportunity to slow things down and concentrate on the two of them — capturing images that I hope will still feel just as special many years from now.
The Reception
After our time at Kenosis, we headed to the Golden Horse Casino in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg, where the celebrations continued with their family and friends.
The day was beautifully coordinated by Yolanda from Le Petite Bridal, who kept everything running smoothly, while Mag Visuals captured the wedding on video.
And as the evening arrived, there was one more opportunity to create something special.
Under The Evening Sky
We headed outside for some night-time portraits, using the evening surroundings and available light to create a completely different mood from the photographs taken earlier in the day.
It’s one of my favourite things about wedding photography — a single wedding can offer so many different opportunities to create images, from the soft light of the ceremony to the warmth and energy of the reception, and finally those dramatic evening portraits.
Teresa and Andries, thank you for allowing me to be part of your special day. It was an absolute pleasure to document your wedding and to help preserve these memories for you, Amelia, Eliana and your families.
In 2016, I photographed the wedding of Klevin’s sister, Mlieshnee and from 2019, Loshini and I had been in communications, regarding the planning of her WEDDING to Kelvin. Covid threw a few spanners in the works for us, delaying the special day.
The Universe worked in everyone’s favour and the grand WEDDING DAY arrived! The day started out with beautiful weather and my VIDEOGRAPHER, Shabier, from SHA-REHAN PRODUCTIONS, and as soon as Loshini arrived, looking RADIANT in her TRADIOANL, COLOURFUL BRIDAL SARI, WE started with the BRIDAL PHOTO SHOOT at DURBAN BOTANIC GARDENS, after which we proceeded to DURBAN’S KENDRA HALL for the NUPTIALS, conducted by GURU VAIPURI according to TRADIONAL TAMIL HINDU RITES.
With the WEDDING CEREMONY wrapped up, gusts enjoyed a scrumptious meal of TRADINIOAL SOUTH INDIAN WEDDING FOOD – vegetable breyani and dhal, provide by BHAGWAN’S CATERERS, before greeting the BRIDAL COUPLE to CONGRATULATE them.
Instead of us going to a separate PHOTO SHOOT LOCATION, we agreed to conduct the WEDDING COUPLE’S PHOTO SHOOT right there at KENDRA! With the recent UPGRADES of the TEMPLE HALL, coupled with the AMAZING WEDDING DECOR, provided by the LEGENDARY KOOGAN PILLAY, we had the perfect BACKDROPS for a ROMANTIC WEDDING PHOTO SHOOT!
Melisha and Shivar celebrated their beautiful rainy-day wedding with a romantic wedding photoshoot at The Grand Exotic in Salt Rock, a stunning venue just north of Durban known for its vibrant architecture and picturesque backdrops. As a specialist in Wedding Photography in Durban, capturing their unique love story in this enchanting setting was an absolute pleasure. The couple’s relaxed and joyful energy made the entire experience seamless, and their traditional Indian wedding attire added striking colour and elegance to every photograph.
After completing the creative bridal photoshoot, we made our way to The Shri Radha Krishna Hindu Temple in La Mercy for the formal nuptials. The sacred Hindu wedding ceremony was expertly conducted by Pundit Maharaj, who officiated both the traditional rituals and the legal marriage proceedings. Documenting these meaningful cultural moments is always a privilege, and forms an essential part of professional Durban wedding photography, where every detail tells a story.
The celebrations continued with an intimate wedding reception held in the venue’s hall adjacent to the temple. Guests enjoyed a delicious traditional wedding lunch of vegetable breyani and dhal, creating the perfect end to a heartfelt day. After the festivities, the newlyweds departed for their honeymoon, leaving behind a beautiful collection of memories captured through timeless Wedding Photography in Durban.
