Celebrating Zachary’s First Birthday

Celebrating Zachary’s First Birthday

Just three months after photographing Joshua and Emma’s Valentine’s Day wedding at Kenosis Community Centre, I found myself behind the camera with the family again — this time for a very special reason.

In May, Joshua’s dad, Marc, asked me to photograph a family shoot to celebrate Zachary’s first birthday.

The shoot took place among the beautiful forests around Hilton and brought three generations of the family together. Marc and his wife, Des, were joined by Marc’s parents, while Joshua, Emma and little Zachary completed the family gathering.

After photographing Joshua and Emma as they exchanged their vows in February, it was wonderful to see them again in such a different setting — this time with their little boy celebrating his first year.

There was something particularly special about photographing Zachary at this age. First birthdays are such a milestone, not only for the child, but for the whole family. A year can pass incredibly quickly, and photographs like these preserve the people, relationships and little moments that make that first year so meaningful.

The Hilton forests provided a beautiful natural setting for the shoot, giving everyone plenty of space to relax and allowing the photographs to capture the family naturally, rather than feeling overly posed.

From wedding day to first birthday, it has been a privilege to be invited to document these important chapters in the family’s story.

Happy first birthday, Zachary — and thank you, Marc and the family, for allowing me to capture this special occasion.

I look forward to Zac’s second birthday next year!

Joshua and Emma’s Valentine’s Day Wedding

On 14 February 2026, Valentine’s Day took on an especially meaningful significance for Joshua and Emma as they exchanged vows at Kenosis Community Centre, just outside Pietermaritzburg.

The Guys Getting up to Tomfoolery

The Radiant Bride

While Emma was getting ready, I took Joshua and his dad, Marc, as well as Emma’s dad, Craig, outside for a groom shoot. The weather, however, had other ideas. With rain coming down, we had to make the most of the covered areas around the venue, creating some relaxed portraits of Joshua and the guys while staying out of the worst of the weather.

Emma made every bit a radiant bride in her elegant, modern wedding dress, supplied by Le Petit Bridal, who also did all the wedding co-ordination

The Ceremony

The Photo Shoot

The rain continued into the service, where a very emotional Johsua watched the love of his life enter the chapel on her father’s arm!

Fortunately, our timing couldn’t have been better. As the newlyweds and their guests emerged from the chapel, the rain finally cleared — giving us the opportunity to get outside and make the most of the break in the weather.

We photographed the families before moving on to portraits of Joshua and Emma together.

The Reception

And, of course, there was another very important member of the family to include: their baby son, Zachary, who was there to share his parents’ special day.

A brief reception followed, and Joshua and Emma opened the dance floor in the sweetest possible way — with little Zachary joining them for their first dance.

It was a beautiful Valentine’s Day wedding, but little did I know that I would be photographing this family again just a few months later, when Zachary had reached another important milestone….. TO BE CONTINUED

Wedding Photography in KwaZulu-Natal: A Collaborative Shoot at Harburg Retreat

Wedding Photography in KwaZulu-Natal: A Collaborative Shoot at Harburg Retreat

Discovering Harburg Retreat as a Wedding Venue for Wedding Photography in KwaZulu-Natal

Wedding photography is about more than photographing a couple on their special day. It is also about understanding the setting, the details, the people who bring the celebration together and the atmosphere that makes each wedding unique.

Recently, I had the opportunity to be part of a wonderful collaborative wedding shoot at Harburg Retreat, a peaceful countryside venue in KwaZulu-Natal, near Greytown. The shoot brought together a talented group of wedding professionals, models and creative suppliers to showcase what the venue can offer couples planning their wedding.

It was a styled shoot rather than a real wedding, but that was precisely what made it so much fun. We had the opportunity to create a complete wedding-day vision, from bridal gowns and flowers to hair, makeup, décor, cake, catering and, of course, photography.

Le Petite Bridal Boutique & Decor played an important role in the shoot, providing bridal outfits and décor. The different dresses, styling elements and carefully arranged details gave me plenty to work with photographically.

Flowers from Flora Belle Florists, styling, hair and makeup, catering, cake and other finishing touches all helped transform the venue into a collection of wedding-inspired scenes.

That collaborative approach is one of the things I particularly enjoy about styled shoots. Everyone brings their own expertise to the table, and the photographer gets to see how those individual elements come together through the camera.

Bridal Photography in the Harburg Gardens

The gardens at Harburg Retreat provided a lovely backdrop for the bridal portraits.

Natural surroundings can make such a difference to wedding photographs. Rather than creating every image inside a reception venue, couples can move outdoors and make use of the landscape, trees, gardens and available light.

For me, the aim is always to make the photographs feel natural and connected to the environment.

A beautiful wedding dress deserves to be photographed properly, but the photograph should still feel like a moment rather than simply a catalogue image.

The same applies to photographing the groom.

Having four brides and four grooms involved in the shoot allowed us to create different combinations and explore a variety of poses, compositions and relationships between the models.

Discovering Harburg Retreat as a Wedding Venue

Located in Harburg, in the KwaZulu-Natal countryside, Harburg Retreat is surrounded by peaceful gardens and beautiful natural scenery. The venue is approximately 49 kilometres from Greytown and is also within reach of Pietermaritzburg, Ballito and Durban.

The property is being promoted as a wedding and function venue, with spaces suitable for both larger celebrations and more intimate gatherings.

One of the highlights is the chapel/church, providing a natural setting for the ceremony before guests move through to the reception spaces. The gardens also provide plenty of opportunities for photographs, whether you’re looking for formal portraits or more relaxed images of the bridal couple.

For a wedding photographer, having a variety of spaces available is particularly exciting. It means the photographs don’t all have to look the same.

There are opportunities for beautiful bridal portraits outdoors, romantic couple photographs, group photographs with family and friends, as well as detail photographs that tell the story of the day.

Bringing a Team of Wedding Professionals Together

The Harburg Retreat shoot was very much a team effort.

Rather than simply photographing a bride and groom, the idea was to bring together a variety of wedding professionals and demonstrate how all the different elements of a wedding can work together.

There were eight models in total — four “brides” and four “grooms” — giving us the opportunity to create a variety of wedding-day scenes and photographic combinations.

Creating a Complete Wedding-Day Vision

What I enjoyed most about this collaboration was seeing how many different wedding services can come together to create one cohesive look.

A wedding involves far more than a venue and a photographer.

There are dresses, flowers, hair, makeup, décor, catering, cake, styling and countless other details that all contribute to the finished experience.

A styled shoot like this gives couples the opportunity to see those possibilities before their own wedding day.

It also gives wedding suppliers the opportunity to work together creatively and show prospective clients what they can offer.

For me, it was an opportunity to approach wedding photography in KwaZulu-Natal from a slightly different perspective — not documenting an actual wedding, but creating images that show how a wedding could look and feel at this beautiful countryside venue.

From a Matric Dance to Family Beach Photography in Salt Rock

Some photography assignments are special because of the location, the light or the people in front of the camera. Others become special because they are part of a much longer story.

I have been photographing Bridget and her family for several years now, and it has been a real privilege to watch that story unfold through my camera.

Fast-forward a little, and I found myself photographing the family again, this time in a completely different setting: barefoot on the beach at Salt Rock.

And that is one of the things I love most about photography. The photographs aren’t just about how somebody looked on a particular day. They become little markers of where people were in their lives at that moment.

Family Beach Photography in Salt Rock

Family Beach Photography in Salt Rock

This latest session was wonderfully relaxed.

There was no elaborate studio setup and no need to manufacture a perfect family portrait. Instead, we had the beach, the sea, beautiful natural light and, most importantly, a family simply enjoying being together.

Family beach photography in Salt Rock is particularly suited to this kind of session. The coastline provides a beautiful natural backdrop, while the open space allows people to move, interact and enjoy themselves rather than feeling as though they are constantly posing for the camera.

For me, the aim is always to capture the people rather than simply create a collection of technically perfect photographs.

The laughter, the little interactions, the way people naturally stand together and those fleeting expressions are often the photographs that become the most meaningful.

Watching a Family Grow Through Photography

One of the unexpected rewards of photographing families over a period of years is seeing how much can change between sessions.

The children grow up. School milestones become university, work and adult life. Relationships change and new ones begin.

Charl is no longer simply the young man I photographed for his matric dance. On this occasion, I also photographed him with his girlfriend, adding another little chapter to the family’s photographic history.

These are the moments that make returning to photograph the same family so rewarding.

There is also a certain familiarity that develops. By the time I photograph a family for the second, third or even fourth time, everyone knows what to expect from me — and I know that the best photographs often happen when I step back and let things unfold naturally.

My goal is to create photographs that feel authentic to the people I am photographing.

I am grateful to Bridget and her family for allowing me to continue documenting those moments.

From a matric dance to a family day at Salt Rock beach, it has been lovely to add another chapter to their story.

Are you looking for Family Beach Photography in Salt Rock or anywhere?

If you are looking for family beach photography in Salt Rock or elsewhere along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, I would love to create photographs that capture your family naturally and authentically.

Whether it is a milestone, a family gathering, a special holiday or simply an opportunity to have photographs made while everyone is together, the most important thing is to create images that you will still enjoy looking at years from now.

Professional Property Photography on the Kwa Zulu Natal North Coast

Professional Property Photography on the Kwa Zulu Natal North Coast

Every property has its own character. The challenge with property photography is to capture that character while showing the space honestly, attractively and in a way that makes potential buyers or guests want to see more.

My recent property photography North Coast work has taken me from Umhlanga through to Salt Rock, photographing a variety of homes and interiors. Each property presented something different, from coastal views and contemporary living spaces to carefully finished kitchens and bathrooms.

Capturing a Property in Its Best Light

Good property photography is about much more than simply pointing a camera at a room.

Light, composition, perspective and colour all play an important role in creating images that feel inviting while remaining true to the property itself. I take particular care with vertical lines and perspective, as well as balancing interior and exterior light so that windows, rooms and views work together naturally.

Photographing the Details That Matter

Interiors can tell just as much of a property’s story as its exterior.

A beautifully finished bathroom, a well-designed kitchen or an inviting dining space can all be important selling points. My aim is to photograph these areas in a way that shows both their design and their relationship to the surrounding space.

Rather than relying on heavy processing or artificial-looking colours, I prefer a clean, realistic finish that allows the property itself to remain the focus.

Living Spaces and the Coastal Lifestyle

Living areas are often where a property’s personality really comes throug

Good composition can show the relationship between furniture, architecture and available space, while natural light helps create an image that feels bright and comfortable.

On the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, there is also the added attraction of the coastline. A living area with a view towards the sea isn’t simply another interior photograph — the view becomes part of the property’s story.

That connection between the interior and the landscape is something I always look for when photographing coastal properties.

Property Photography from Umhlanga to Salt Rock

The North Coast has a distinctive character, but no two properties are the same. From apartments and contemporary homes in Umhlanga to properties further north towards Ballito and Salt Rock, each location and each home requires a slightly different photographic approach.

My goal is always the same: to create clean, crisp and inviting images that represent the property accurately while showing it at its best.

Professional property photography can make a significant difference to how a property is presented online. When potential buyers or clients are scrolling through listings, strong photography gives them a reason to stop, look closer and explore further.

Looking for Property Photography?

Whether you are a property agent, developer, interior designer or private property owner, professional photography can help present your property clearly and professionally.

If you have a property on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast that needs photographing, I’d be happy to discuss your requirements and put together a photography package to suit the property.
